Many associate Japan to be a country of long hours of work and the word Karoshi (death by overwork) is a common term heard in Japan. However, in an effort to curb excessive working hours and to spur consumption, the government and business groups have launched the Premium Friday campaign in February 2017.
On Premium Friday companies let workers finish work at 3:00pm on the last Friday of every month so that they can go out and have fun. Many Bars, Izakayas (Japanese style bars) started opening at earlier hours to welcome customers for Happy Hour time. And Retailers, Hair Salons, Nail Salons, Spas offer special discounts as well.
The aim of the government is to change the long hour working habits and boost the economy. This is due to statistics that show that Japanese workers typically use just half of their annual paid leave entitlements. In part to work around this problem and enforce time away from work, Japan has 16 annual public holidays, more than countries including the UK, U.S. and France.
If you happen to be in Japan during Premium Friday take advantage of the many deals you can find in different cities. And at the same time, it is a good time to create special Premium Friday Sales as there is a higher probability that consumers would be visiting shops or browsing the internet for online shopping!
